Inter IKEA Group acquires forestland in Latvia and Lithuania

Inter IKEA Group has signed an agreement to acquire forestland in Latvia and Lithuania. By acquiring its own forestland, Inter IKEA will gain the ability to manage part of its wood supply in the Baltics and contribute to the development of new methods for responsible forest management within and beyond the IKEA value chain.

The seller is CapMan Natural Capital, exiting assets from its Dasos Timberland Fund II. The acquisition is expected to close during the first half of the calendar year 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

This investment further strengthens our commitment to responsible forest management and locally sourced raw materials. By managing forestland responsibly and increasing regional wood processing in the Baltics, we aim to support local economies, collaborate with communities, and maintain healthy forests for generations to come,” says Bruno Mariani Piana, Global Forest Investments Manager at Inter IKEA Group.

The acquired land, totaling approximately 24,000 hectares, is situated in various parts of Latvia and Lithuania. The acquisition will secure long-term access to responsibly sourced wood materials for regional suppliers and sub-suppliers, creating better opportunities for future growth. In addition, the acquisition provides an opportunity to explore how innovative forest management practices can enhance climate resilience and biodiversity.

Earlier this year, Inter IKEA Group and Ingka Group (the largest IKEA retailer) announced a research collaboration with the European Forest Institute (EFI) and Preferred by Nature. The project tests practices such as closer-to-nature and continuous-cover forestry to improve climate resilience and minimize biodiversity impacts, with the intention of scaling proven methods across forests owned by entities under the IKEA brand and in the wider supply chain. These practices will be implemented in the newly acquired forestland.

"Owning forestland allows us to drive projects promoting responsible forest management, such as climate- and biodiversity-smart forestry. This is a part of our commitment to invest in further development of responsible forest management to make it an industry norm. It gives us the chance to explore and demonstrate innovative forest management practices in the years ahead," says Mikhail Tarasov, Global Head of Forestry at Inter IKEA Group.

For all wood used in the IKEA supply chain, Inter IKEA Group will apply strict requirements to secure responsible forest management practices on the acquired land, ensuring that the forest management is FSC-certified and complies with IWAY standards, which is the code of conduct applicable to all IKEA suppliers.
